INFORMATION ON H1N1 (SWINE FLU)
As the potential threat of a full-scale swine influenza (A/H1N1)
pandemic continues to spread, the number of reported cases increases
throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and around the world. The
World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Departments
of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security have declared a
public health emergency. The declaration paves the way for states and
local governments to access federal funds to monitor and control such
an event. Public health offices are advising jurisdictions to review
their public health, continuity of operations and emergency management
plans to ensure the potential for a pandemic outbreak is adequately
addressed.
Please contact BDR’s Christine Packard (978-877-3444 or cpackard@beckdr.com)
if you would like a review of your continuity of operations plan or
pandemic response plan to determine your state of readiness for a
pandemic influenza outbreak.
BDR is one of the
nation’s premier homeland security, emergency management and disaster
readiness and recovery firms – providing public health planning
services to local, state and federal government agencies nationwide.
We have worked with organizations of all sizes, ranging from major
metropolitan urban areas to rural communities. Since 2001, the firm has
supported approximately 200 emergency planning projects, while ensuring
compliance with industry standards.
Following
the success of the 2007 Senior Leader’s Seminar (SLS), the BDR Team was
retained by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG)
to design and implement a second SLS for the National Capital Region
(NCR) Emergency Preparedness Council (EPC), which focused on the
preparedness, response and recovery during a pandemic influenza event.
The seminar was held on October 21, 2008, and was for elected officials
of the 17 jurisdictions of the NCR, including the District of Columbia
and jurisdictions in Northern Virginia and Maryland. Additionally, as
part of the medical surge capacity project for MWCOG, BDR conducted
interviews with 14 surge capacity subject matter experts from around
the nation to identify best practices and common challenges for surge
capacity planning. The firm is also slated to assist the East-West
Gateway Council of Governments and the St. Louis Area Regional Response
System (STARRS) in planning, designing and developing a regional
hospital/healthcare coordination plan for 12 counties in Missouri and
partnering hospitals in Illinois. These experiences combine to give
BDR a unique and unparalleled advantage.
